May 1, 2022

Good Evening, Wildcats Families:

First, I want to thank all of our parent groups who go above and beyond to make sure every Wildcat has a great high school experience. This weekend alone, parent organizations supported our teams traveling for competitions, organized a feeder-wide arts festival, hosted an amazing prom, coordinated a golf tournament, and put together daily treats to celebrate staff during the upcoming Teacher Appreciation Week.

There is a lot of stress on every level as we begin a month of AP, IB, STAAR and ACP exams. Teachers have worked tirelessly during this most difficult time of being an educator to make sure our current Wildcats are as prepared and accomplished as any group before them. We’re not a perfect group, but we have done our best to navigate these circumstances in a way that is both human-centered and result-oriented. Everyone wants to feel accomplished and defining success in these times has been hard. During this week of Teacher Appreciation, it would mean the world to our staff if you let them know through a short note or token of acknowledgement that they have done right by your child. I hope that you will encourage your child to share that gratitude with a teacher this week as well.

Tuesday night there will be a Zoom meeting to review AP testing and on Thursday, Dr. Meaker will host a Zoom meeting for senior families. This is also opening night for our musical, Pippin. April 4, 2022

Good Evening, Wildcats Families:

This is an exciting week for our 9th and 10th graders. This week’s STAAR EOC results impact school accountability, teacher effectiveness ratings, and individual student graduation eligibility. English teachers have prepared these students, so please make sure they get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and bring their charged District-issued laptop. Plan to bring them early so they can settle into their testing room without being rushed.

Also, as we continue to improve campus safety and work to minimize classroom disruptions, students without a pass in the hallways will be held with our Reset Coordinator until the end of the period. This will help keep bathrooms clear and hallways peaceful. Please reinforce the importance of having a sense of urgency when transitioning to class as well as the importance of daily attendance.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

First, thank you for being the most committed school community in Dallas ISD. By aligning the talents of the Woodrow staff with your support and additional District resources, we will be able to achieve our mission of maximizing each Wildcat’s social, emotional, and academic growth. While we increase efforts dedicated to safety, we’ll continue to explore how we design a learning experience rooted in a sense of belonging. Feel free to reach out to me, Principal Moran, with suggestions or recommendations. This is hard work during a challenging chapter in our history, and a tremendous responsibility that we take very seriously. It’s a privilege to be on this journey with you all.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

Safety Updates

Priority #1 - Short Term Actions to Address School and Park Safety:

  • Dallas ISD PD will provide officer support from 3-6 p.m.
  • Dallas Parks and Rec will add additional signage to the park addressing guns, drugs, trash and associated criminal penalties
  • Dallas Parks and Rec will look to add cameras at Will’s Place for structure protection
  • Dallas ISD will add cameras to front of Woodrow Wilson to monitor high traffic areas
  • Dallas ISD has added fencing extending from the track to the east side of the building to reduce students leaving campus and to protect exposed doors from visitor access
  • Woodrow Administration will partner with Dallas ISD’s Truancy Office on additional supports/consequences for students/families of concern
  • Woodrow and JL Long Administration, both PTAs, and City of Dallas will review the current traffic safety plan and make adjustments as needed.
  • Dallas ISD PD will continue to partner with Dallas PD in response to criminal activity at Willis Winters as well as communication about such activity to inform Woodrow administration
  • Dallas ISD PD will work with our local gang unit to evaluate reported activities
  • Dallas ISD PD will continue providing staff for school games and events at Willis Winters
  • Kathy Ruff, Woodrow PTA Communicant, will create a communication one-pager clarifying who should be contacted, how they should be contacted, and the expected response based on the reported offense. This will be shared to the Woodrow/JL Long school communities as well as the community at-large. (draft attached)

We have been working on this list since March 1.

In addition to the items above, Superintendent Hinojosa has committed three more school monitors as well as a position to help re-engage students and families. While safety is paramount, we must address the root cause by creating a sense of belonging for students who have fallen behind their peers. That can be more pronounced at Woodrow will such gifted athletes, performers, and scholars.

There are also $17 million dollars in bond funds that will be spent on school improvements over the next two years. Many of which will be focused on improving school safety.

Finally, I will be meeting with feeder principals this week to make sure all of our schools are working together to make sure students and families feel confident that our schools are the absolute best place to be.

With these new allocations and in preparation for the 2022-2023 school year, we will host our own on-campus job fair Wednesday. If you know of individuals who would be great teachers or paraprofessionals, please forward them the registration link below so we can meet them Wednesday, March 30.

AFC will be offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week from 7:45-8:50 a.m. in the library. Students are expected to arrive on time, and will not be permitted to enter the library after 7:50 a.m.

March 21, 2022

This week we launch the final grading period. As we move towards important summative exams, it’s very important that students attend all classes, are prepared and on-time, and fully engage in the learning experiences teachers create.

It is so exciting to see acceptance and scholarship letters for the students in the Class of 2022. Share these notes with Ms. Walton, our ASP representative. Senior parents, make sure your student is on track for graduation as well as finalizing college requirements. Our goal is that 100% of Wildcats are TSI-met and eligible for college classes once they graduate.

Finally, I know there have been questions about bell schedule adjustments for next school year. Now that we have course selections we will be able to see potential conflicts and finalize details to make sure students continue participation in both rigorous course offerings while having adequate time for practices or rehearsals necessary for award-winning performances. We’ll share additional details in the next couple weeks.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

Dress Code Reminder

We have observed students becoming relaxed with dress code expectations again. Please assist us with reinforcing dress code expectations. If a student is unable to get in dress code before entering a classroom, they will be sent to the Reset Center to address the issue.

Please continue to talk with your student about course selections for the 2022-2023 school year. They’ll submit their choices during their English class on February 22 or 23rd.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

Equitable family voice thrives when school creates platforms to share their honest experiences and perceptions. When school leaders and staff are intentional about listening to families, schools can respond and adapt to and evolve to what the community needs. Please take the 2022 Parent Survey.

Good Evening Wildcats Families:

We hope everyone is getting ready to enjoy the Superbowl and has finalized Valentine's Day plans. Monday kicks off National Kindness Week, highlighted by National Kindness Day on the 17th. A little more love is what we need right now. I want to share some love for our undefeated Mock Trial team who just qualified for the state championship. We also had six swimmers and four wrestlers qualify for the state tournament in their respective sports. Girls basketball will begin their playoff run Tuesday night at 6:30 against Sunset at Loos Fieldhouse. I also want to celebrate our teachers who consistently create safe and welcoming environments before, during, and after school so that students get the social, emotional, and academic support they need. We’d love to see more students take advantage of extracurricular and academic supports before and after school. Finally, continue to talk with your student about course selections for the 2022-2023 school year. They’ll submit their choices during their English class on February 22 or 23rd.

Good Evening Wildcats Families
This is an exciting time of year. We’ve finished the first semester, have settled into the second term, and are already planning for the 2022-2023 school year. I’m very proud of how students are meeting behavioral and academic expectations. To keep everyone informed, our goal is to issue a weekly progress report to students each Tuesday that includes grades, attendance, and tardy data as well as action steps. Please review this each week with your student.

This Tuesday we will host a virtual meeting about making course selections for the 2022-2023 school year on January 25 from 6:00 to 7:00 and then virtual conferences with teachers on January 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. There are also free AP, ACT, and SAT boot camps. Continue to let us know how we can support you and your child academically, socially, or emotionally.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

Tardies
Thank you for your cooperation with this. Each Tuesday we will provide your student with a weekly progress report that includes grades, absences, tardies, and action items. We started tardy detentions last week. Those who continue to be late to class or do not attend detention may be assigned time with our Reset Coordinator to work on a plan to be on time. Some may also need a parent to accompany them to their classes if problems persist.

ID Badges

JROTC has distributed student badges. It is the expectation that they are on and visible at all times. Students who have lost or forgotten them will need to pay for a temporary or replacement badge.

Wildcats Families

Today is a great day to reflect on our words, actions, and impact on others. So much of the high school journey is helping students understand themselves and the world around them. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message that the goal of true education is intelligence plus character remains true today.

Students will complete MAPs testing in Math and English classes this week. Teachers will then use student data to design individualized support plans so that they will be successful on spring summative assessments. Coming up, we will host a virtual meeting about making course selections for the 2022-2023 school year on January 25 and then virtual conferences with teachers on January 27 from 6-8 p.m. Please review the accompanying email for information on AP, ACT, and SAT boot camps.

Good Evening Wildcats Families

Despite a challenging testing week before the break, as results come in, Woodrow continues to set the pace for the rest of the comprehensive schools in the District. For those who missed their ACP, make-up sessions continue in the library each afternoon. Outside the classroom, our sports teams have started the second semester strong with big wins in basketball. soccer, and wrestling.

We reset behavioral expectations on Wednesday. Students have responded to tardy sweeps with a new sense of urgency. While we have reminded students about dress code, enforcement will begin on Monday. For students unable to meet the standard, parents will need to bring their child the appropriate attire. After a supply delay, badges are being reprinted and reissued to all students on Tuesday. This refocus on operational items will ensure a safe, welcoming, and focused environment as we continue to transition from a culture that had become too casual for us to meet our traditional academic standards of excellence.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

This second semester student expectations reset presentation was provided to students Tuesday at 10:15 a.m.

Students were also provided a hard copy of the school dress code

If you need uniform assistance or are interested in helping the school have back up items on hand for students, please reach out to our Community Liaison, Ms. Elizabeth Jurado (elcorral@dallasisd.org).

Cooperation will minimize negative interactions. We do not want students to miss class because of dress code infractions. We need your help with these expectations. Let us know how we can help you.

There will also be additional consequences for those with excessive tardies. This may include a parent walkalong where the guardian shadows the student for a day. Please work with your student on the importance of being on time to each class period.

Good Evening Wildcats Families
Welcome to 2022. With each new year comes hope and optimism about a brighter future. It’s a chance to reflect and commit to habits necessary for the outcomes we desire. In many cases it’s simply getting back to basics.Woodrow has an unparalleled history of excellence. When students return on Wednesday we’ll meet with them to celebrate accomplishments from the fall, remind them of the legacy they are a part of, and reset social and academic expectations necessary to maintain the Woodrow standard.  In preparation for the spring semester, please discuss academic goals for the new year, re-establish home routines that support those accomplishments, and make sure they have what they need to be successful. This includes a clear backpack, writing utensils, an organizational system, a charged laptop, their charger, and dress code attire including a mask. With these fundamentals in place, we’ll continue to create welcoming, rigorous learning experiences that maximize the social. emotional, and academic growth of all Wildcats. Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

I hope everyone had a wonderful break full of gratitude and self-care. We will have three more weeks and then another extended break. On Tuesday night from 6 - PM we will host Welcome to Woodrow where student guides will lead prospective families on twilight tours to showcase what makes our school great. On Wednesday, Seniors will hear a presentation from Josten’s and then have senior portraits taken on Thursday or Friday. They need to sign up for a time at woodrowyearbook.com. These next five days are also critical for preparing students for upcoming exams. We will begin STAAR EOC retesting on December 7 and then ACPs will begin on the 14th. We will host a session for our STAAR EOC retesters on the 4th from 9:00 to 12:00.  For some students, their success the next few weeks may determine if they earn credit and others need to pass exams to graduate this year. Please communicate the importance of finishing this semester strong academically and behaviorally. Students on the need to make up all seat time, clear all zeroes, be on time, and attend all classes. Seniors should also complete action items such as applications for admission, financial aid, and scholarships. Your student’s success is a team effort. We couldn’t do it without you!

Good Evening Wildcats Families

There are only 5 more instructional days until the holiday break. The semester will be over before you know it. It is very important to review grade, tardy, and attendance data in PowerSchool with your student. To earn credit for a course, students must earn a passing grade and be in attendance at least 90% of the time the course meets. Students who miss more than 10% of the time must participate in the Principal’s Plan where they recover seat time. We host recovery sessions on Wednesday and Thursday mornings and afternoons as well as select Saturdays. Both excused and unexcused absences count unless they are school sponsored events such as a field trip or competition. Students who do not earn credit in the fall may need to attend night school this spring and take classes this summer. Let’s make a commitment to attend 100% of classes, be on time 100% of the time, and complete 100% of the tasks assigned over this last month of the semester in preparation for course exams.  Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

Good Evening Wildcats Families

These next two weeks are very important as we close out the first grading period. This week is College “Go Get It” Week with spirit themes each day as we promote a college-going culture. Seniors should be preparing for the ACT test on October 5th. Then we will have our senior Blitz event while many non-seniors will take the PSAT on October 13th. All students should be working to improve their grades as the first grading period ends October 8th. Now that we are on nine-week cycles, there are only two grades that make up the semester average making this mark even more important than in the past. Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

Wildcats Families:

As we celebrate Attendance Awareness Month, the Woodrow faculty and administration want to thank you for your support in making sure students show up on time ready to participate in learning activities that will accelerate their social, emotional, and academic growth. We need your help reinforcing that students do not leave campus once they arrive, that they cannot order food to be delivered, and that they meet dress code expectations. Students are enjoying the opportunity to wear jeans and Woodrow shirts each day. While most students show their Woodrow pride appropriately every day, staff is still spending time addressing those wearing open-toed shoes, joggers, and immodest attire. We need your help. If you need help with uniform assistance, please contact our main office at 972.502.4400.

September Focus: Suicide Prevention and Student Attendance Awareness Month

For many of our students, school is their safe place. September is both Attendance Awareness and Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 10-34 and 4th leading cause of death for people 35-54.

Woodrow Wilson has six counselors, a school-based mental health clinician, and partners with Parkland through on-site the Youth and Family Clinic to meet student and staff social, emotional, and mental needs.

For more information, visit: https://nami.org/Get-Involved/Awareness-Events/Suicide-Prevention-Awareness-Month

We are more likely to notice students in need when they are at school. Students with perfect attendance during the month of September will be entered into a raffle for a special prize. One student will be selected from each trustee district to be recognized districtwide.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.

September Focus: Student Attendance Awareness Month

We believe that student success is directly linked to attendance. Classes begin at 9:00 AM each day. While most students are arriving with enough time to eat breakfast and to be in class on time, we’re not at 100% yet. This habit is as important as any academic skill students will learn while at Woodrow.

In order to protect student’s safety, Wildcats under the age of 18 need to be signed out by a parent in the Attendance Office when leaving campus. We are not able to accept permission through a note or a phone call. This will help make sure they aren’t leaving without permission. This includes students wanting to leave during the lunch periods. The exception are those students who have an early release period on their schedule.

Wildcats Families:

Thank you to everyone who helped make our first week a success. Students did an outstanding job wearing masks, bringing the appropriate backpack, and wearing an outfit that ties our campus together. Teachers worked hard to create a safe and welcoming environment for all Wildcats. As we work toward building agency in our young men and women, they will have the freedom and be expected to make mature choices as we coach and support along the way. Striving to be better each day than the one before will ensure they are prepared for life post-high school.

Thank you for partnering with us to make Woodrow Wilson High School the role model of an exemplary educational experience which sets the benchmark for inclusion, equity, and a world-class education for all schools to emulate.
